GIS 4035 Module 2: Land Use/Land Cover Classification, Ground Truthing & Accuracy Assessment
This weeks activity was looking over Land use and Land cover classification, ground truthing, and accuracy assessments. The overall lab wasn't a bad lab to do. Many of the techniques I had learned in my previous GIS classes and so it was a great refresher on what to do. The longest part of the lab was having to make tons of polygons for the LULC.shp feature class that I created. It seemed as though this part of the lab was a very tedious process but in order to have the best results you much take the time to accurately paint you picture. Part two of the lab seemed easy enough and proved to be easy enough. The second half of the lab required me to make 30 random points on my map to see whether the polygons that I previously drew were accurate or not. Instead of picking the points myself I chose to run a random point sampling tool to help eliminate any bias on my part of the sampling. This process allowed me to accurately look at my random features and know that they were "TRUTHFULLY RANDOM." I am happy to say that I had an 83% accuracy on my random points which means that most of the features I drew were correct. The overall lab was an enjoyable experience and helped me to understand the lesson plan for the week a great deal better.
